Body Doubling: The ADHD Productivity Hack That's Basically Magic (But Real)

What the Heck is Body Doubling?

Okay, before you start imagining some sci-fi cloning experiment, let me break it down for you. Body doubling is like having a productivity buddy. It's when you work alongside someone else, each doing your own thing, but magically getting more done. It's especially awesome for those of us with ADHD, but honestly, it's great for anyone who's ever stared at a to-do list and felt their soul leave their body.

How It Works (No Lab Coat Required):

  1. Find a human (or a very focused pet, we don't judge)

  2. Plop down next to them (in person or virtually)

  3. Do your own work, but bask in their productive vibes

  4. Watch in amazement as you actually finish stuff

Why Body Doubling is Like Productivity Steroids (But Legal and Fun)

1. Accountability on Steroids

You know that feeling when you're home alone and suddenly decide to reorganize your sock drawer instead of working? Yeah, that doesn't happen when someone else is there. It's like having a silent cheerleader who's also subtly peer-pressuring you into productivity.

2. Goodbye, Lonely Work Vibes

Working alone can sometimes feel like you're Tom Hanks in "Cast Away," but instead of a volleyball, you're talking to your houseplants. Body doubling brings back that "we're in this together" feeling, minus the office small talk about someone's weird lunch.

3. Tricking Your ADHD Brain

For those of us with ADHD, focus can be as elusive as a cat when it's time for a vet visit. Body doubling is like setting up a focus trap, and your brain falls for it every time.

4. Creates Structure

Body doubling sessions often have a set start and end time, providing structure to work periods. This can be particularly helpful for those who struggle with time management.

How to Do the Body Double Dance

In-Person Body Doubling:

  • Convince a friend to be productive with you (bribery with snacks is totally acceptable)

  • Join a co-working space (bonus: free coffee and people who understand the struggle)

  • Hit up libraries or cafes (just don't be that person who buys one coffee and camps out for 8 hours)

Virtual Body Doubling (For When Pants Are Optional):

  • Video call a buddy and pretend you're in "The Office" but actually working

  • Join online body doubling groups (it's like a productivity flash mob)

  • Use body doubling apps (technology: making us productive despite our best efforts to procrastinate)

The Science-y Bit (Because We're Fancy Like That)

Turns out, there's actual brain stuff happening here:

  • Your brain gets a little dopamine party from the social connection

  • The "oh no, someone might see me scrolling Twitter" anxiety keeps you on task

  • It's like peer pressure, but for getting stuff done instead of questionable teenage decisions

My Body Doubling Success Stories

Many people with ADHD report significant improvements in productivity when using body doubling. Here are some of mine:

  1. Before I even knew what body doubling was, I used it when packing to go back to college at the end of the summers. My best friend would come over, sip wine, and "help" me pack by sitting on my bed and watching me; occasionally chiming in that "you should probably throw that away".

  2. I have a weekly meeting with a friend via zoom where we chat and work on whatever it is we need to, sometimes more chatting than working happens, but if we need to get shit done we can hold each other accountable.

Tips for Body Doubling Like a Boss

  1. Choose Your Partner Wisely: Productive friend good, chatty friend bad.

  2. Set the Mood: Maybe light some candles. Just kidding, unless that helps you work.

  3. Use a Timer: Because time is a social construct, but deadlines are real.

  4. Minimize Distractions: Your phone is not invited to this productivity party.

  5. Be Consistent: Make it a habit, like checking your ex's Instagram, but healthier.

Ready to Double Up and Get Stuff Done?

Alright, productivity padawan, ready to try this body doubling magic? Here's your mission, should you choose to accept it:

  1. Find a body doubling buddy (or a really motivating houseplant, but a person works better)

  2. Schedule your first session (put it in your calendar, like, for real)

  3. Set clear goals for each sesh.

  4. Actually show up (this is the hard part, we believe in you)

  5. Bask in the glory of your newfound productivity

  6. Reflect on your productivity and adjust as needed

Who Can Benefit from Body Doubling?

Body doubling isn't just for those with ADHD. It can help:

  • Kiddos struggling with homework or study sessions

  • Students who've mastered the art of staring at textbooks without reading them

  • Remote workers who've started talking to their coffee maker

  • Anyone who's ever said, "I'll just watch one more episode before starting"

  • Anyone battling procrastination or lack of motivation

Boost Your Productivity with Body Doubling

Body doubling might sound like a weird productivity cult, but trust me, it's the good kind of weird. It's like finding out that eating ice cream makes you lose weight – too good to be true, except it actually works.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a buddy, fire up that video call, or head to a coffee shop. Your to-do list doesn't stand a chance against the power of body doubling. Who knows, you might even finish reading that book that's been on your nightstand since 2019. Dream big.
